What Is Freesat?
Freesat is a free-to-air digital satellite television joint venture operated jointly between the BBC and ITV. This service offers a satellite alternative to the current freeview service on digital television, with a selection of channels available without subscription, to users purchasing a receiver and dish. The service also makes use of the additional capacity available on digital satellite broadcasting to offer a selection of high-definition programming from the BBC and ITV. Free- to- Air operates using the same principles as Freesat as in it is also public broadcasting through a freely available satellite, hence the name 'Free - to Air'
What Is Saorsat?
Saorsat is the name RTE have given to their new Free- to- Air satellite service which, together with Saorview, will provide 100% population coverage for its public broadcast stations. Because Saorsat is a satellite service, a satellite dish and compatible STB or TV is required to receive the signal. The excat satellite Saorsat will be broadcast from has not yet been revealed but it will NOT appear on Astra 28.2E ( the satellite Sky and Freesat use). The satellite Saorsat will use will direct the signal beam over the country of Ireland and only Ireland.
